Increase in health insurance in 2025: what do you need to know?

As you may have already read or heard, health insurances will be more expensive next year. All health insurers have now announced their new health care premiums. The increases range from more than 3 euros to 20 euros per month. From now on, the new premiums are listed in our comparator.

Take out health insurance

You can take out your new health insurance before 2025 from November 13 to December 31, 2024. If you terminated your old health insurance before 1 January 2025, you still have until 31 January 2025 to take out a new health insurance.

Rising healthcare costs: increased premium

The increase is mainly due to rising healthcare costs. This increase in healthcare costs is due to several factors, including:

• Ageing in the Netherlands

• Higher wages for healthcare providers

• Increase in the number of chronically ill people

Due to the aging population, the health allowance is expected to continue to increase in the coming years. There is an increased need for paramedical care, general practitioners, nursing and other healthcare providers. This leads to higher costs, resulting in an increased health insurance premium in 2025.

Healthcare allowance 2025

The health allowance increases along with the higher health care premium. On average, the health allowance increases by €80 per year. For singles and students, the maximum healthcare allowance increases by €7 per month. Families see an increase of €13 per month in their maximum care allowance. As a result, low-income households are compensated, so that they are less affected by the rising premium.

Deductible 2025

In 2025, the mandatory deductible for the basic insurance will remain €385, which means that, as an insured person, you must first pay this amount yourself before your health insurer reimburses the costs under the basic package.

Supplementary insurances: health care needs

When choosing health insurance, it is also important to look at additional insurances that meet your health needs. These packages offer extra coverage for care that is not included in the basic package.

Supplementary insurance can cover physical therapy, dental treatments and alternative therapies, for example. If you go to the physiotherapist regularly, insurance that reimburses physical therapy can be financially advantageous. If you attach great importance to oral care, it is smart to look at additional dental insurances that offer more reimbursements for treatments such as check-ups, orthodontics or oral hygiene.
