Around million Dutch people travel to a winter sports destination every year. Are you a winter sports enthusiast? Then don't forget to check your travel insurance, health insurance and liability insurance!
Travel insurances can vary considerably. You usually only find out about this when something happens. After all, winter sports coverage does not come as standard in travel insurance or health insurance. We would like to make you aware of this because suppose the trauma helicopter has to pick you up and then transport you lying on a gypsum flight to the Netherlands, the costs can reach around €10,000.
We already let you know, if you want winter sports coverage, you can take out additional winter sports coverage with your travel insurance. Keep in mind that your travel insurer always expects you to behave responsibly and, for example, not go out alone or get on your skis when there is a risk of avalanche.
Health insurers often reimburse medical costs abroad based on Dutch rates. Suppose you have an accident, the hospital costs are therefore in principle reimbursed. This is often sufficient, but in some countries healthcare is much more expensive than in the Netherlands.
In that case, you must pay the difference. You can insure yourself for this with additional medical coverage under your travel insurance. There are also additional health insurances that offer such coverage. So always look further than just ticking a check mark.
We hear you thinking, what does liability insurance have to do with winter sports coverage? On the slopes, just like in traffic, “traffic rules” apply. These rules are set by the International Ski Federation (FIS). If you don't follow those rules, it can have consequences. For example, if you crash into another winter sports enthusiast and suffers (injury) damage.
In such a situation, you may be held liable. Travel insurance usually does not cover that risk. So make sure your liability insurance is also in order before you go on winter sports.
